Before the
formation of City Improvement Trust, the then Dewan of Mysore, Sri Sheshadri
Iyer, has constituted Sanitary Board and through he had undertaken various
developmental works. Mr. Standishi was the Chairman of the said Sanitary
Board. In the year 1898-99, Plague had spread all over the Mysore City and thousands of people died on account of this tragic incident. In order to prevent recurrence of plague and also to remove all the slum areas, the then Maharaja of Mysore H. H Sri Nalwadi Krishna Raja Wodeyar - IV vide his Order No. 168-79 LF 36-02 / dated 18-9-1902 constituted a 12 member committee to implement the order. The following were the members of the said committee. 1) W.Mak Hatjin, Chief Engineer (Chairman) 2) Mackaniki, I.C. S. Personal Secretary to Maharaja 3) Senior Surgeon and Sanitary Commissioner, Govt.of Mysore 4) Deputy Commissioner, Mysore 5) Reverend E.W.Thomson 6) M.Venkatakrishnaiah 7) Civil Surgeon, Mysore 8) Executive Engineer, Mysore Division 9) Vice President, Town Municipality (Secretary) 10)Lingrajae Urs 11)Mir Kamaludin Alikhan 12)Anantharajaiah On the basis of the report of the above Committee the City Improvement Trust Board was founded by then His Highness the Maharaja of Mysore Sri Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wodeyer - IV. The act came into force on the first day of Dec.1903 vide notification No. 1973-LF75 dt. 25/11/1903 (substituted by Act II of 1952). C.I.T.B started functioning from 1st January, 1904. The same person headed both CITB and the Municipality till 1958. One more reason which many people point out for the establishment of C.I.T.B is the tragedy of Mysore palace. The earlier palace of Mysore was burnt during the marriage ceremony of the princess. In order to rebuild the palace, the Maharaja of Mysore decided to shift the families of those people who were residing in close to the palace, called Kote Mysore. Hence, C.I.T.B. was decided to be constituted. |
