The Government declared the local planning area for Nanjangud
Town and environs on 5.4.1983 and the same was amalgamated with
the Mysore City Planning Area in its notifications dated 26.04.1984
and called it as the "Mysore-Nanjangud Local Planning Area".
Subsequently, the Government in its Notification dated 18.08.1988
declared a local Planning Area for the "Environs of Mysore
- Nanjangud Local Planning Area" by including 33 villages
of Mysore Taluk, 3 villages of Srirangapatna and 5 villages
of Nanjanagud Taluk and amalgamated it with Mysore - Nanjangud
local planning area declared on 26.04.1984. Thereby, the jurisdiction
of Mysore - Nanjangud local planning area has been enhanced
covering an extent of 495.32 Sq.km, which includes Municipal
limits of Mysore and Nanjangud Towns and 111 villages, (77 from
Mysore Taluk, 18 villages from Nanjangud Taluk and 16 villages
from Sriranga Patna Taluk)
In the meanwhile, the Government has promulgamated Karnataka
Urban Development Authorities Act, 1987 which
came into force on 19.11.1987 to provide for the establishment
of Urban Development Authorities for the planned development
of major and important urban areas in the State. Accordingly,
Mysore Urban Development Authority was constituted on 16.05.1988
and it became the Planning Authority to
Mysore - Nanjangud local planning area. The Planning wing headed
by the Town Planner Member is in charge of Planning under KTCP
Act and KUDA Act.
The Town Planning wing of the Mysore Urban Development Authority
has taken up the present revision of the approval comprehensive
Development Plan. More over, as per the then Section (25) of
Town and Country Planning Act, 1961 the revision of Comprehensive
Development Plan was required once in 5 years. The Government
in its letter-dated 22.12.1987 requested the Authority to revise
the Comprehensive Development Plan.
The revision of Revised Comprehensive Development Plan is
necessary for the following reasons:
In the finally approved CDP dated 23.09.1981, the conurbation
area was 9221 hectares for an estimated population of 7 lakhs
by 2001 AD. Considering the 1981 Census population figures of
Mysore Urban agglomeration, the population of the city works
out of 6.7 lakhs by 1991 at the prevailing growth rate. Due
to rapid industrialization and economic activity, the population
of the city is expected to be one million by the turn of Century.
This figure is very much beyond 7 lakhs. Hence land is required
to accommodate additional 3 lakhs population.
THE FUTURE POLICY OF DEVELOPMENT OF MYSORE
The State Government approved the Revised Comprehensive Development
Plan for the City of Mysore in the year 1997. However, due to
the all-round growth of the city and also as per the Karnataka
Town and Country Planning Act, 1961, it was also necessary to
review the policies defined in the approved the Revised Comprehensive
Development Plan.
In the approved Revised Comprehensive Development Plan, the
land use was planned for a population of 13 lakhs by 2011 AD.
However, the population in 2001 is 7.87 lakhs and by 2011 AD
it is now expected to be 13 lakhs. Hence, increasing the conurbation
area from the earlier 92.21 Square Kilometers
to 156.69 Square Kilometers has provided the land use
for the year 2011 AD.
